Odin is the supreme deity of the Norse pantheon of gods, known as the "All-Father". In his pursuit of knowledge he sacrificed one of his eyes in order to drink form the well of wisdom. His knowledge of runes has given him the power to slay his enemies, divine the future, cure illness, and compel women to sleep with him (hence, his many wives and lovers).
In myth he encourages his men to fight like wolves, which may be an allusion to the Were-Legion. He also rides upon his steed, Sleipner, which is also the name of Reinhold's multi-legged assault tank.
